Kathmandu: Janvi Group, an electrical/electronic goods’ trading company, and its sister companies, have been found guilty of evading Revenue taxes. The Mittal Overseas Pvt. Ltd under the Janvi Group, based in Bhotebahal of Kathmandu Metro politan, the area widely known as hub for electrical and electronic items in Kathmandu. Another company under the same group, Plastocab Pvt. Ltd., has also been found to be involved in large-scale revenue evasion while importing and distributing various electrical and electronic products. According to reports received by the nayasadak.com, Janvi Plastocab Pvt. Ltd., under Janvi Group, has been importing parts used in LED bulbs from China at very low prices and selling after assembling them in Nepal by getting higher prices. It has been found that the company imports the parts in kilograms (kg) and sells the assembled bulbs individually (per piece). During customs clearance, they declare these items as raw materials to evade taxes, later assembling and selling them at high prices. As per the information received, the readymade LED bulb parts imported by the company are priced between USD 2.5 to 10 per kg. However, merchants have revealed to the nayasadak.com that the company sells the products per piece in Nepal. Previously, the Revenue Investigation Office in Butwal had found that Brillian Lighting Pvt. Ltd. had similarly imported finished products disguised as raw materials. The department is currently investigating the company. Brillian Lighting, located in the SEZ (Special Economic Zone) of Bhairahawa, was found to be importing parts as raw materials, assembling them into finished electrical/electronic goods, and evading customs duties — prompting an investigation by the Revenue Investigation Department. A merchant from Narayanghat shared that Janvi Group, based in Taha Galli ,the area known as electric goods market in Kathmandu, has also been importing finished parts and assembling them locally. Janvi Group, operated by Dilip Kumar Agrawal, and its sister companies — Mittal Overseas Pvt. Ltd. and Janvi Plastocab — have been reportedly evading large amounts of customs revenue for a long time during the import and sale of electrical and electronic goods. Although Janvi Group’s director Dilip Kumar Agrawal claimed that had had been only trading goods instead of making goods, investigations show that the companies under his ownership have been importing significant quantities of LED bulb parts and components of electrical/electronic goods. When trying to contact officials from the Revenue Investigation and Customs Departments for comments, an employee stated they were unavailable due to the public holiday.
