
Kathmandu, May 5: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that the government was committed to implementing the right to information (RTI) in the country. At a programme organized at the Office of the President today on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of National Information Commission, Minister Gurung said, "The government is committed to citizens' right to information. The government is concerned about how to effectively implement it (RTI)." He added that policy-based and structural reforms are in place for ensuring citizens' access to RTI and promoting it so as to reaffirm the relevance of the federal democratic republic. Minister Gurung, however, admitted that the implementation part of the RTI was still weak and expressed readiness on behalf of the government for timely revision of the RTI Act. He stated that the RTI should be made systematic to maintain good governance adding that the government and the state bodies' decision should be transparent and accountable to the public. On the occasion, Chief Commissioner Dr Suresh Prasad Acharya said the Commission was effortful to ensure the citizens' right to information adding that the Commission has performed role as an instrument to maintain good governance and transparency. Senior journalist Taranath Dahal, who was felicitated at the event, said that the state of implementation of RTI was not satisfying. On the occasion, journalist Dahal and others were honoured for their contributions to implement the RTI. Dahal was honoured with the Binaya Kasajoo Outstanding Prize with a purse of Rs 55,000 and a letter of appreciation.
