
Kathmandu. Organizing a press meet the Kangchenjunga 70th Summit Anniversary - 2025 celebration program has been disclosed. 2025 marks the first ascent of Mt. Kangchenjunga 70 years ago in 1955. At 8,586 meters, Mount Kangchenjunga is a prominent feature of the eastern Himalaya and the third-highest peak in the world.
The events will commemorate this milestone, honour the legacy of this iconic peak and elaborate on the "Five Pillar Plan" to create a sustainable future.
Kangchenjunga's name originates from Tibetan and translates to 'The Five Treasures of Snow,' representing gold, silver, grain, gems, and sacred texts. These treasures hold deep spiritual significance in local mythology, especially for the Limbu people and Tibetan Buddhists.
According to the press release -Kangchenjunga's "Five Pillars" represent the holistic development plan of Kangchenjunga which are (i) environment and biodiversity conservation, (ii) sustainable tourism infrastructure, (iii) human capital and economic development, (iv) smart technology, and (v) destination marketing.

Kangchenjunga Conservation Area Management Council (KCAMC) is celebrating with a three day event (April 18-20, 2025) to mark the 70th year of Kangchenjunga's first ascent on May 25, 1955, by Joe Brown and George Band. This event will bring together the communities, partners and stakeholders in the Kangchenjunga Conservation Area, Lelep, Taplejung.
The primary objective of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Kangchenjunga summit is to promote mountain tourism, conserve the Himalayas, honor historical achievements, support the prosperity of local communities, and advance sustainable mountaineering practices and strategic development. This event aims to showcase the breathtaking beauty, biodiversity, and mountain tourism potential of the
Kangchenjunga region to the global community. The key activities of this celebration are as follows:
To honor the contributions of mountaineers, Sherpa guides, researchers, and mountain activists who have played a significant role in the 70-year history of Kangchenjunga mountaineering.
To promote various aspects of Kangchenjunga mountaineering at both national and international levels, making the Kangchenjunga mountain a safe, sustainable, responsible, and attractive destination for global climbers.
To raise awareness about the conservation of the Himalayan ecosystem and the impact of climate change on Kangchenjunga and its surrounding areas.
To recognize the contributions of local communities, including the Sherpa, Limbu, and Rai and other indigenous communities in mountain tourism while preserving and promoting their cultural heritage and traditions.
To facilitate discussions among the Government of Nepal, mountaineering associations, and local stakeholders on new technologies in trekking and mountaineering, safety measures, eco-friendly practices, mountain sports, climbing permits, fees, and other areas to further organize and streamline mountaineering activities.

The historic 70th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, will be commemorated with a landmark gathering at Aloft Hotel Kathmandu on April 24, 2025. The event will bring together government leaders, international organizations, mountaineers, media, and private sector partners to celebrate the mountain's enduring legacy and advance collaborative efforts for a "Five Pillar Plan to create a sustainable future.

Inspiring Addresses: Speeches by pioneering Nepali climbers, including Ang Phurba Sherpa and Nima Jangmu Sherpa (first Nepali male and female summiteers of Kangchenjunga). Mingma David Sherpa (six-time K2 summiteer), and acclaimed actress and humanitarian Manisha Koirala.
Film Premieres: Screening of "Kangchenjunga: The Five Treasures" by John Porter, chronicling the mountain's climbing history, and "Kangchenjunga: The Five Pillars" by Samriddha Pahad and KCAMC, envisioning its ecological and cultural future. After the event, documentary and photos will be handed over to NMA for International Mountain Museum
